Positive Press ABOUT BITCOIN & ESG outnumbers negatives 4:1 so far in 2023

Overview:

From our research it would appear that whenever a disruptive technology come into being, it is attacked. Such was the case for the radio, the book, the bicycle and more recently the Internet. This attack often seems to stem from fear of the unknown (remember the fear that computers would “take all our jobs away?”) As technologies become better understood, their positive benefits to humanity get a chance to shine through. This would appear to be a rite of passage that any disruptive technology must go through.

One way to measure the zeitgeist with respect to a new technology is to measure the amount of positive vs negative articles appearing in mainstream news media. On the weight of evidence, it would appear that 2023 represents the “tipping point” where the volume of positive articles on Bitcoin’s environmental impact started to outweigh the negative articles.

Based on this approach, as of the end of the first 1/3 of 2023, there has been a net balance of almost 4:1 in favor of positive ESG narratives surrounding Bitcoin.

How we classified articles:

Blogs, reprints, articles from within the Bitcoin/ crypto ecosystem or articles that are ostensibly commentaries by one journalists on another journalist’s work were excluded from the count. I’ve also excluded all but one article where multiple articles cover the same event from a different angle. For example, I included Euro News’ coverage of the discovery of sustainable Bitcoin mining in Bhutan but excluded One Green Planet’s article on how Bhutan used renewable mining to help achieve energy independence, because it’s the same news story.

Articles where more than 80% of the commentary was positive were considered “positive”

Articles where 40-80% of the content was positive were considered neutral/mixed

Articles where more than 60% of the commentary was negative were considered “negative”

Number of positive articles – as of 7 May 2023: 23
